Annual Community Report
Posted July 2, 2010
Hi parents, here is the Annual Community Report which I have to prepare for the government at the end of every school year. It corresponds to the school plan that I sent them in Sept 2008 and how we are doing with the priorities and strategies we laid out in the plan.
Thanks,
Peter Todd

Volunteer Appreciation Friday June 25th
Did you know that our TKS Volunteers are some of the very best in Manitoba? You are certainly #1 in our hearts. Over this past year we have had numerous Volunteers enter the school to serve, support and come alongside our Staff and Teachers alike. You have been drivers, helped with reading, cooking, playing, supervising, administration tasks and so much more. What a blessing you have been! As we make plans for our 2010-2011 school year we trust you will plan to spend time volunteering here again as you are all a very big part of our School family and so deeply appreciated.
Transitional Program
Our off campus classroom on Notre Dame Ave is now completing its 3rd year. Here, 48 students have graduated from the Transitional Program. Overall, one student is now doing well in public school, 26 have joined The Bridge program, while eight have joined and seven will join (by the end of this year) the mainstream classes at TKS. The Transitional Program teaches newcomer students to speak, read and write in English, while preparing them socially, academically and spiritually to experience success in Canadian schools.

The 2009-2010 basketball season turned into a very extraordinary season for the Varsity Girls Basketball team! Coached by Mrs. Leighton and Mrs. Boschmann for the past 13 years, this was the first year that TKS entered a Varsity team into the Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) "AA" Zone 12 division. Schools throughout the province play in divisions based upon their population. During the season, the team travelled to tournaments at the Universtiy of Manitoba (3rd place finish), Teulon, Neepawa (Consolation Winners) and Morris, MB (Tournament Champions). The Varsity Girls won the Zone 12, and then went on to win an Inter-Zone game (Zone 12 & Zone 4) against Carmen to qualify for the Provincial's held in Boissavein, MB. The Provincials were an exciting time and the team played extremely well, finishing 3rd in the Province. Carreira Lamoureux was chosen as a Tournament all-star at the Provincials. She was also selected as a Provincial All-Star and played in the "Graduating All-Star" game. Mrs. Leighton was also selected to coach the All-Star team. What an honour for both of them. At the banquet that followed, Carreira was awarded by the Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association as the "AA" Female player of the year, the top award given out! Four of our players graduate this year. Carreira Lamoureux (playing University basketball at CMU next season), Krista Smith, Brittany White and Jennifer Tesarski send them off with our congratulatpions for many seasons well done and best wishes in their future endeavors.
Parking Lot Update
Posted: June 8: 2010
After tabulating the parking lot survey, we decided to keep the “loop solution” along with some minor changes. The new lay-out proposed by our traffic engineer Peter Todd will:
- Improve the safety
- Provide a few more parking spots
- Provide a non stop traffic lane to quick release car traffic
- Provide a longer pick-up drop-off area
Please see the new parking lot lay-out attached to this letter and thank you for your feedback . The new lay-out is planned to start on May 7th.
A Word From the Principal
Posted: June 8, 2010
Thanks so much for the feedback you gave during the review. It was a very helpful process that highlighted a lot of positives as well as areas for further growth and development. I gave a fuller report to the Parent Advisory Council and have included the headlines of the Report and recommendations below. If you have questions or thoughts about any of the areas listed, please contact us through the school office.
Positives:
There were many positive comments about the school. These included comments about the staff, the atmosphere, the spiritual life, the reception, the coordination of events, the resource and music programs and the school leadership. One of the highlights of the review was the recognition of the great staff we have here at The King’s School. There were also many positive comments about the direction of the school over the last five years including the Transitional Program (downtown) and the Bridge. There was a lot of support and admiration for the staff involved in those programs. It was especially encouraging to know that so many in the school community believe that The King’s School has a bright future.
Areas for further growth and recommendations:
The recommendations began by highlighting the need to do a better job of communicating the school vision and mission statement and to stay connected to the Godly foundations on which the school is built. The Directors and the Administration Team have met together to begin to strategize how to move forward with these recommendations.
Then the report highlighted the need for great unity in a number of areas:
- Amongst the staff
- Between the Administration Team and staff – focusing on the need for clearer communication of roles and responsibilities and better follow through on some policies and procedures
- Around the Bridge – The concerns included:
- Inadequate communication with the school community on the vision and purpose of the program
- Curriculum and Kingdom concepts – focusing on the need to ensure that all staff are trained and encouraged on an ongoing basis in delivering Christ-centered curriculum and education to their students. Strategies have been put in place to deal with each of the issues above including the formation of staff committees to address the administration and Bridge concerns.
The next areas of concern had to do with the Principal’s and Vice-Principal’s busyness. Strategies to deal with the concern have included Peter and Marlene to meet with an educational consultant (Susan Eberhard, one of the review team) to go through their job descriptions and schedules.
Also, a staff committee has given a recommendation on the possible reconfiguring of roles within the office and administration to provide stronger support.
As noted above, we have a great staff team at The King’s School, but the report highlighted the need for more systematic and regular support for them in the form of a more coordinated staff evaluation and professional development program.
One of the other major recommendations was to do with the structure of the school. It was suggested that we look at reconfiguring the school into a K-4, 5-8 and 9-12 structure in keeping with the direction taken by Manitoba Education Citizenship and Youth. The committee that met to look at this are very excited about the possibility of moving forward with this proposal, but are looking at phasing it in over two years, rather than making wholesale changes for this September.
One of the areas that we are now praying into and strategizing over is the spiritual climate of the school. As a staff we will be taking a spiritual retreat together at the beginning of September prior to the start of classes. We are also looking for ways of increasing the level of spiritual life in the student body including the development of a K-12 whole school Bible Program which is being drafted by the elders of Gateway Church. In this regard we are very grateful for those of you who get together and pray for the school; your prayers are making a difference. Other areas that were highlighted that we are also working on include the facility and safety issues.
We believe that God encouraged us to do this review, and He is also helping us to process the recommendations. We as a staff are excited about the changes that are coming about as a result. So thank you again for your input. If you have any other thoughts or concerns, please forward them to us.

Volunteer Request - Let there be light!
Posted: June 1, 2010
If you are getting this, it’s because I need your help. We are looking to proceed with phase 2 of the lighting improvements in the building. We’ve all seen the difference better lighting can make with the changes that were made in the gym last summer! Now it’s time to affect the rest of the building. This opportunity is possible because of the MB Hydro Lighting Grant. Hooray!! But, there’s a time limit. MB Hydro has been gracious enough to extend our 2008 grant until this September. So, I need your volunteer help to complete the change over of fixtures and ballasts. Terry Doerksen has agreed to oversee the project as the journeyman electrician (he will be signing off the grant papers for Hydro, and confirming work has been done per code). We are looking for volunteers who can commit to a few Saturdays or weekday evenings this spring and summer and work as teams changing either ballasts or fixtures, under controlled/safe environments. Terry will be working every second Saturday, and I will be committing 1 or 2 evenings per week (Tue, Wed or Thur).
If you have never worked with wiring that’s okay, the work is not complicated and we will train you. You do, however, need to be able to lift small objects above your head and be willing to climb 5 foot step ladders.
If you would like to help, please contact myself either by phone or by email (info below). I’d love to hear from you!
Thank You!

Dainties for Spring Tea
Posted: May 30, 2010
Dear Parents of Grade 4 to Grade 6 Students,
Every year the Kindergarten to Grade 3 students have a mini Garage sale to raise money for missions. We hope to raise enough money to continue to support a child to attend one year at the Kingdom Education Centre in a poor area of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. A year’s tuition costs $310.00 and this money covers tuition, school supplies, and their uniform. In addition to the Garage sale we are having a perennial sale and a Spring Tea. We are asking the parents of the Grade 4-6 students to help us in raising the necessary money by donating perennials or dainties for the tea. You are also most welcome to come out and buy perennials and relax and spend time with other parents in our Tea room. Selected Grade 4-6 students will rotate in serving coffee, tea, juice and dainties.
Dainties can be brought on Friday morning, May 28, to the church kitchen. Perennials can also be brought that morning or any time in that week to the courtyard area by the drink machine.
Please sign and return the form below to indicate that you have read this letter. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Garage Sale
Posted: May 30, 2010
Dear Parents of K to Grade 3 Students,
For the last six years the Kindergarten to Grade Three classes have had a mini garage sale to help students become familiar with using coins, making change, while raising money to support a mission project. This year we plan to have our garage sale on Friday afternoon, May 28th from 1:00 – 3:30 pm in our classrooms. In past years the money has gone to support a child in Africa so they could attend school.
To participate in this sale, your child needs to bring items priced to sell. All the pricing should be done at home. Some examples of things to sell are popcorn, baked goods, gently used books and toys, or dollar store items. No item should be priced at more than $2.00. Allergy alert: No food items should contain nuts or have been in contact with nuts.
For the garage sale, each student needs to bring a shopping bag and coins with which to buy items and also make change when others buy from them. To simplify things for us, any coins brought for change may also become part of their offering. We invite you, the parents, and also grandparents, to come and enjoy the garage sale with us. We will again be having a Tea Room set up for the parents and any adults to relax in during the sale or when shopping is done. This is a good time to connect with other parents from The King’s School. Tea, coffee, and dainties will be served by Grade 4 – 6 students and the money raised will also be donated for this years missions projects.
We will also be having a perennial sale. We are hoping those of you that have perennials that could be divided are willing to donate them. Please bring your perennials in containers with the name of the plant and how and when they flower as well as how to take care of them if they need special care. This will also be a good opportunity for you to get some good deals on perennials and support Missions at the same time.
After the garage sale is over, all students will meet at an Assembly to celebrate and give their offering to support a child to go to school.
Please sign and return the form below to indicate that you have read this letter. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

If you require more coupons they are available at the front desk or please let us know in your child’s agenda.

Our lost & found containers are overflowing with items that need to be claimed! In addition to regular clothing items, there are many winter jackets and ski pants that have been left at school after the snow melted. Tuesday, May 18th will be the final opportunity to claim these items before they are given away to charity. All lost and found items will be on display on tables for this one day only, so we encourage you to come and take a look. You may also come in on Monday and look through the lost and found bins if you are unable to make it to the school on Tuesday. Writer's Workshop
March 22, 2010
Dear Parents and Students,
As you may know by now, we have deferred this year’s Grade 7 – 12 Spring Drama Production until February 2011. The script has already been selected and we have begun to recruit staff and parents for the production team. We still have key positions that are not yet filled, so if you are interested please talk to me via the school office.
This year, we will begin preparing for the 2012 production by hosting a playwriting contest on April 17, 2010. Contestants will be invited to write a one-act play in just twelve hours, from 9AM – 9PM. Entries will be judged by the Drama Committee, and the top entries will be developed for possible production in 2012.
To facilitate the contest, TKS will present a three-hour workshop the week before on April 10 at 9AM: “Writing a One-Act Play.” The workshop is open to TKS students grade 6 and up, but those wishing to attend must fill out an Application Form, available at the school’s front desk or at www.tkspac.com.
The workshop is being facilitated by our own Mr. Tim Webster who, apart from writing, adapting and directing a number of productions here at the school has also a long history of writing and performing in a variety of different formats and genres. He has generously offered to give his time to this workshop, which gives our students a unique opportunity to hone their writing skills.
We are also opening the workshop to students and interested parties from other schools and churches with a registration fee of $40, which will be waived for all TKS students. Other Gateway Christian Community attendees may apply for a reduced registration fee of $20. The deadline for the application forms is March 25 and space is limited, so if you or someone you know is interested in learning how to write a one-act play, get that application in right away!
Happy writing,
Mr. P Todd,
Principal

February 16, 2010
Dear parents and guardians, this is a short note to say a huge THANK YOU for the tremendous Teacher Appreciation Week you gave us last week. Every day there were treats on the staff room table and notes in our mailboxes.
On Friday we were treated to a feast that literally took our breath away. The food was wonderful, the room was beautifully set up, the students did a great job of entertaining us and the gifts were amazing. We were all greatly moved. If it was your intention to encourage us and let us know how much you appreciate us, you succeeded in a powerful way. The impact on the morale of the staff was huge.
We are all deeply grateful to you for your kindness and more than ever determined to repay your trust and support by doing all we can to partner with you to see your students grow into the fullness of all that God has for them.
So, thank you all very much and may God bless you all as you have been such a tremendous blessing to us.

Staff Appreciation Week - Thank You from PAC
February 15, 2010
Thanks so much to all the parents involved in this past weeks Staff Appreciation at The Kings School. 54 staff was blessed this week with all your contributions of food, money, gift donations and time!
To highlight just a few of the many many events that were going on throughout the week – donations of healthy and sweet treats, flowers, daily trivia question and scripture verses for the staff room each day. Parent and student special projects for the teachers involved blessing them with gift cards, favorite snacks, massages, spa treatments, flowers, special notes and cards of appreciation, just to mention a few.
The Friday “Chili” luncheon brought all the staff together in one place. Our Transitional Program staff was able to join us this year, as it was an in-service with all the staff joining in at the main campus for the David Freeman sessions. This was also the first year the Bridge program staff were part of the school and it was a pleasure to be able to serve them.
At the lunch, the staff enjoyed many wonderful prize donations. The traditional presenting of the Ties (signed by the grade 12 graduating Class of 2010) was given to Mr. Todd and Mrs. Schroeder. There was also a premier performance of the Grade 4 Band who played a special song to bless all staff and honor their teacher Mr. Booth. Each staff received a treat bag of chocolates and a T-disc for the infamous Tassimo coffee machine in the staff room. Ralph Zacharias and Norm Kreis put CD’s with a compilation of music together for each one of them.
It was a fun week where many volunteers contributed to make it a success.
For those who acquired donations, please take the time to download a copy of the "Thank You" letter that you can forward on to the business. They were all acknowledged at the Friday Staff lunch. You'll find the letter on the TKSPAC website for download. We appreciated their contributions. It added to making the week special for the staff.
I'd like to acknowledge our core committee of Lisa White, Pam Kreis, Ruth Jeffery and Sarah Hay who worked along side of me in the last few weeks to ensure so much was taken care off - THANK YOU!
This past week there was a concentrated focus on blessing the staff in so many different ways. Let’s also remember that any day is a good day to encourage and acknowledge the teachers and staff at The King’s school who invest in our children’s lives each and every day.
And...there’s always room for improvement. I'd love to hear new ideas and suggestion for next year’s event.
Thanks again to everyone who played a part,
Joyce Tesarski (on behalf of the TKS PAC)

We are very excited about the many activities and blessings planned for the staff this week. There is something for them to look forward to each and every day.
Many parent volunteers have already put in a lot of time and energy making sure this week will be extra special for the staff. There is still an opportunity for you as parents to get involved. We are specificly looking for:

If you are looking for a way to get involved, here are some volunteer opportunities the PAC has to help ensure we have a successful week - which ultimately is to bless their socks off!
One item to note - This week of Staff Appreciation is Feb.8-12th. The Thursday/Friday are In-Service days. Students will not be in school, but staff will be. We want to ensure that we continue to bless the staff during these two in-service days. It also means that we only have the first 3 days of the week to be a blessing with the student involvement.
Specific Area's to volunteer:
o Healthy Snacks and Treats for the Staff Room (Mon/Tues/Wed)
+ Examples: Muffins, loafs, cinnamon buns, cheese, fruit, veggies & dip, dainties, chocolate.
o Friday Luncheon Feb. 12th
+ Set Up / Food preparation (10am - 12 Noon)
+ Food donation (drop off between 9-10am)
> Slow Cooker filled with Chili
> Biscuits/Buns/Bread
> Veggie Platter
> Punch (Frozen Orange Juice/Ginger Ale)
> Cake for dessert
+ Clean Up (1pm-3pm)
o Prize Donations (personal donation, or from a business - both are welcome)
o Parents to work on Special Projects for the elementary Teachers and Para’s (which include the students).
For those contact information we have from the past, you may be receiving a call from Ruth Jeffery's who's graciously offered to contact parents to see who is available to help out. Many contacts we do not have phone numbers or emails due to privacy laws. We need you to make the first contact, so please do so by contact me, Joyce via email tesarski@shaw.ca or phone 222-7488.
When we connect with you we can give further details and answer any questions.
Thanks so much,
Joyce Tesarski

TKS Staff Appreciation Week
January 14, 2010
It's that time again!!! An opportunity for us as parents to "Love On" the staff at The Kings School.
(That's what Marlene Schroeder calls it - they really appreciate what's been done in the past from all the parents and students.)
Below you'll find the same letter that hopefully made it home with your child this week. If not, it's here for you. Some of you have already responded to attending the planning meeting this weekend or what you want to volunteer to help out. I've sent this email out to the contacts I had from last year. I ask that you take some time in the next several days and help get the word out about Staff Appreciation Week. One on one contact is the best way! Please make sure the parents you are most connected with are aware of this event and if they are intereted in being a part of it, please pass on my email and or phone number. Our biggest needs with be help for the Friday luncheon and creating special projects for the elementry teachers.
If you can make it Saturday, please let me know, else watch your emails or www.tkspac.com for updates and how you can be involved.
Thanks so much....

Lots and Lots of Pennies!
December 10, 2009
It all started with an announcement and one penny donated to help out Hannah Taylor and the Ladybug Foundation which seeks to help out homeless people in our town. The K to 6 students responded to the challenge to give their spare change and they gave and gave and gave. It was a bit embarassing to take so many pennies to the bank. One family - the Bogales- went to businesses - and raised over $150.00!
At last count we have raised 50 000 pennies (over $500.00) to support Hannah Taylor in this most worthy cause.
A great big thank you to all who gave and let's remember to pray for the homeless this Christmas!

|
Attention to all Parents and Caregivers of The King’s School (TKS) Students.
Parents have always played a very important role at The King’s School. Any volunteers are considered to be a blessing to our school. We are in need of some volunteers for the following:
Movie Nights
Assistance is needed to pop and bag popcorn on the event day. The time involved is approximately 2 hours and detailed instructions will be provided.
Volunteers are needed for November 6 and December 4.

Hot Lunch
-
Parent Serving Volunteers: Parent volunteers are required on Mondays from 10am – 1pm to assistance with food prep (i.e. flipping chicken nuggets, mixing coleslaw) and serving students their lunches. Parents can volunteer for every Monday, two Mondays a month or even one Monday a month.
-
Job Sharing with the Kitchen Manager: This position would share the role of Kitchen Manager i.e. in case the kitchen manager is ill. Generally the kitchen manager takes care of ordering milk, pizza on pizza days, preparing the shopping lists and more importantly oversees the kitchen on Hot Lunch Days (organizes the kitchen, assigning tasks to parent volunteers, student volunteers etc). A more detailed description can be provided however keep in mind that this is a shared position with an experienced Hot Lunch Kitchen Manager.
-
Job Sharing with the Bookkeeper: This position would share the role of Bookkeeper. The bookkeeper organizes the orders and inputs data into spreadsheets for the Kitchen Manager and reconciles the monies with the orders. This role takes approximately 2-3 days a month for one person. A more detailed description can be provided however keep in mind that this is a shared position with an experienced Hot Lunch Bookkeeper.
-
Shopper: This position is someone who can go pick up food or supplies for Hot Lunch as per the direction of the Kitchen Manager and deliver them on the day of Hot Lunch first thing in the morning. A Costco’s card is an asset but not required.
-
Mission Students: Students who are raising funds for a Mission Trip can volunteer to help with Hot Lunch and earn funds towards their trip. Sign up is in the Student Lounge or by emailing the Hot Lunch Team. Parents of Mission Students – please encourage your students to sign up as they are a valuable part of Hot Lunch
-
To Volunteer please contact the Hot Lunch Team at tkshotlunch@gmail.com or by leaving the Hot Lunch Coordinator a message through the school office.
